Second Chance Tournament & Rules Update

FUN PART: Second Chance Tournament!

Is your bracket destroyed? Did your picks go awry? Do you find yourself tied for 500th place and full of despair? Weep no more, bracketeers, because our 2nd Chance Tourney is created just for you.

We start with 16 books instead of 64, so the stakes aren’t as high but the prizes are just as fine.

Go forth and pick new brackets and be hopeful once again.

Please note: you must press the NEW button if you are entering for the first time. This is an entirely new tournament setup.

Also please note: check the list of nicknames, and please do not choose an existing nickname. For folks who have already entered their second chance tourney picks, please double check that the web entries match the email verification. If not, email the verification to Jane and she’ll square it away.

And you can keep up with the tournament results, check your bracket, and your neighbor’s bracket HERE.

NOT FUN PART:  A Rules Update

During the first few rounds of tournament voting, we were alerted to some shenanigans involving readers encouraging others to use IP-reloading browsers to enable unlimited voting. And polls that had around 2000 votes were alongside polls with more than double that amount.

Please don’t do that. It’s one thing to use your phone, your laptop, your mom’s phone, the free McDonald’s WiFi down the street and your school library hookup, then going to get your grandpa’s cell phone.

It’s another entirely to reload your browser and vote endlessly over and over. One is effort (and also hilarious). The other is exploiting a loophole.

It’s a fine line, yes, but it’s there. Please don’t do that.

After analyzing the vote patterns, we can see where reloads were happening. If we see that pattern again, we will suspend the polls immediately and disqualify both books. Yes, that’ll fuck up the tournament. Yes, it disqualifies both books when only one may be breakdancing in the loophole.

But silly and happy participation is what makes this fun. Strategic exploitation of a loophole is not.

Thanks for being awesome.

Let the tournament continue!

Last Call for Brackets, and Let the Mayhem Begin!

DABWAHAThings to announce!

1. Last call for brackets for the tournament!

Bracket entries for the DABWAHA tournament will close tonight, 19 March 2014, at 11:59pm ET.

Yup, entry time is extended – I misread the NCAA schedule, which we try to adhere to, and they have two days of play-in matches. We just get down to business on the first day, 20 March 2014.

To fill out your bracket, go to the tournament site, and click “NEW”

Screencap of DABWAHA entry boxes

Would you like to update your bracket? You can do that until the deadline, too! To update your bracket, select your nickname from the dropdown box, re-enter your picks, and submit!

If you’ve got questions, please email us or leave a comment, k?

2. Voting begins tomorrow, 20 March 2014 – and runs for two excellent and exhausting days. ARE YOU READY?

The schedule for voting is online, so have a look! Please note that voting takes place here at the DABWAHA site. One vote per IP address.

3. Thank you to our sponsors!

The DABWAHA tournament is sponsored by Penguin, who would like you to know about JR Ward’s The Hero and Maya Banks’ Letting GoYou’ll see the ads for these books at the top of the tournament site. Thank you, Penguin!

We also have an ad for Marie Sexton and Heidi Cullinan’s Family Man, which we added briefly to the tournament while under the mistaken impression that Love by the Numbers was a 2012 book. I really enjoyed this book, which was one of the Sizzling Book Club picks in 2013, so if you’re looking for MORE awesome books to discover through the tournament, don’t miss theirs, which is out in print this month.

And I also need to mention that the tournament is brought to you by TBR LLC, a joint project of Smart Bitches Trashy Books LLC and the Dear Author Media Network LLC, and also by caffeine (on my end, anyway).

4. Moar prizes? YES MOAR!

The prizes page has been updated with more excellent prizes from publishers and authors, so have a look. And thank you like WHOA to everyone who has offered a prize. This tournament’s prize collection is really spectacular.

5. May the voting be in your favor!

Get ready to vote tomorrow through Sunday, and, if you feel like watching some fun, have a look at the #dabwaha tag on Twitter, where vote mongering, trash talking (often by effusive and genuine compliments to one’s opponents) and general mayhem take place.

This year, there are graphics. And they are hilarious:

Theresa Romain's Jane vs Jane graphic, on top of a piece of toast, wherein she compares her character Jane to Courtney Milan's Jane

Hard Abs Big Cocks Unicorns - vote Unbuttoned

Loki captioned You DID choose The Firebird to win in your bracket didn't you? DIDN'T YOU?

Jeannie Lin and her bribe sheet: unreleased scene, plus promises of manga drawings of each round

It’s Selection Sunday for DABWAHA 2014!

DABWAHAAre you ready?! It’s Selection Sunday for the 2014 DABWAHA.

The full slate of nominees has been announced, and reader votes determined the 8th book in each category. And now: the DABWAHA bracket is ready to be filled out.

You have until 3/17/2014 at 11:59:00 PM ET to enter your picks!

Hey, you know what? The internet sometimes gives you mixed up information! We have confirmed that what we thought was a mistake wasn’t at all.

Despite some data in Goodreads saying the publication date was 2012, the pub date for Love by the Numbers is 2013 – and author Karin Kallmaker confirmed that the book was published in 2013, though the publisher had moved the date from 2012 to 2013. (That’s probably the source of the mix up.)

So, yeah, oops x2. THIS IS PART OF THE FUN.

Ok, no, it’s not. But oh, well. BACK WE GO!

And to Marie Sexton and Heidi Cullinan: please contact me to arrange beating with wet noodles and frozen fish at your earliest convenience.

You may resubmit your bracket by going back to the selection page, and clicking on the dropdown box at top right.Select your nickname and make new picks. Then hit submit. Your new bracket will replace the old one when it’s uploaded into the tournament software.

Again: our apologies!

Due to a mistake in publication year, one of the titles in the GLBT category has been changed. Love by the Numbers by Karin Kallmaker is a 2012 book (oooops) and has been replaced by Family Man by Marie Sexton and Heidi Cullinan. Our apologies to the authors, and to you!

How do you do that?

Easy! You can follow the instructions step by step. The essential steps to enter your bracket:

  1. Click on “New” and enter your nickname. Only the Nickname will show up publicly.
  2. Click on the title of the book you will think will win each match until you have only one book left as your Champion. Note: you are not only trying to predict which book will win, but also which author/fandom/community can best gather votes to back their favorites. Yes, it’s tricky. That’s why it’s fun.
  3. The tie breaker is the number of reader nominations we received. Hint: it is under 1000. Another hint: it is higher than 3.14.
  4. When you hit submit, you’ll go back to the DABWAHA page – do NOT be alarmed! Your entries will not show up immediately. They have to be manually uploaded in batches, so they don’t show immediately. If you don’t see yours within a few hours, please email Jane.

Important note for visually impaired readers: if you’re using a screen reader and having problems with the bracket selection page, please email Sarah for help completing your bracket. Don’t be shy!

What’s the point of all this?

Fun! Mayhem! The newfound knowledge of connecting your wireless device to all the free WiFi in a three mile radius so you can vote repeatedly!

Also, there’s prizes. OH YES. The prizes have been posted. We have a ton of awesome prizes donated by many splendid individuals including iPads, iPad minis, Kindles, gift cards, books, and chocolates. Plus, there are prizes for middle of the road brackets, the worst bracket and for winners of each round. Just by picking a bracket, you’re entered in the tournament.

So what do we do now?

Right now: pick your bracket. Have a look at the books, and ask yourself, What awesome book in each category is most likely to win each round? Then, once you’ve picked your bracket, we begin voting.

Yup. The winner of each round is determined by reader voting. Polls open, and voting commences! There’s vote mongering, trash talking, and compliment wars on all forms of social media during the DABWAHA, too, so there’s a lot of goofy fun to be had.

The Bribes, The Videos, The DABWAHA

The best part of the DABWAHA is always the trash talking, the vote mongering, and the creativity that is unleashed to gather votes and try to advance to the next round. This year’s creative offerings are no different: grade A excellentness!

Sarah Morgan and her son created a video for Once a Ferrara Wife:

ETA: Ros Clarke is leveraging the power of baby animals and hot dudes to attempt the trouncing of Morgan’s book:

Jeannie Lin is promising some seriously awesome dancing should she advance to the next round:

And Molly O’Keefe is also behind a video asking for support by warning of…great chaos:

But wait – there’s more! Susanna Kearsley’s helping O’Keefe, too – it’s book training time!

Laura Florand is offering some seriously dangerous threats – and adorableness – as she tries to gather votes for TWO books:

And Dawn Addonizio is ready:

And Astrid Amara also has a video bribe…with THREATS! OH NOES!

Lest you think there are only videos offered as creative requests for voting, get ready for All The Temptation of the Writers!

Ruthie Knox is not messing around: she has voter guides, side-by-side comparisons to the books her books are facing, PLUS promises of deleted scenes, extra epilogues, and other terribly tempting things. Battle of the Bad Girls? Knox is ready.

But the real temptation: “If Room at the Inn advances to round 2, I will post the first chapter of my first manuscript, Rebound. As is. With all the embarrassing newbie mistakes left in.”

Kit Rocha is promising deleted scenes featuring Jared & Ace over at Facebook. As in she’s making said promises at Facebook, not that Jared & Ace got frisky at Facebook. Though who knows, maybe they DID. It is a deleted scene. Could be ANYTHING.

But Kristen Callihan is not without her own ammo:

And she’s offering up her own unpublished material:

And then there’s Tessa Dare, who is lining up a whole buffet of what she calls ‘incentives’ to gather votes:

She is not monkeying around here, yo.

It is ON. Get ready for voting, and good luck!
